Busan, Korea’s second largest city, is a port city on the south eastern tip of the Korean peninsula. Just less than 3hrs away via the KTX from Seoul, Busan is a great addition to a holiday in Korea on top of Seoul.
Here are 5 MUST DO things that one should not miss out on when in Busan.
1. Gamcheon culture village
Aka the Machu Picchu of Korea (or as I like to call it, the Cinque Terre of Korea) due to its vibrant coloured houses built in a staircase-like fashion on a coastal mountain of Busan.
Tip: remember to wear comfortable shoes!
177-11, Gamnae 2-ro, Saha-gu, Busan
Subway station: Toseong Station, from exit 6, turn right at the intersection and the bus stop is just 20m away.
Then take bus 2 or 2-2 to Gamcheon Culture Village
2. Shopping in Seomyeon
Seomyeon is the “Myeong-dong of Busan”, it’s the most crowded place in Busan because its filled with countless restaurants, bars, street vendors and shops. It’s definitely THE place to see and to be seen.
Did I also mention the endless underground shopping street?
Address: Bujeon-dong, Busanjin-gu, Busan
Subway station: Seomyeon station.
3. Spa land
Located within the world’s largest department store, shinsegae centrum city, is spa land, a modern jimjilbang with 3 levels worth of state of the art spa facilities.
With 22 spas, 13 themed jimjilbangs (Saunas) and an open air foot spa, the 4 hour time allocation just doesn’t seem enough.
Oh and similar to Japanese onsens, you will need to be naked in order to use the indoor hot springs.
Pssst.. This is also the place where running man episode 82 was filmed.
Level 1, 35 Centumnam-daero, Haeundae-gu, Busan
Subway station: centrum city
4. Jalgachi Fish market
Get your seafood on at Jalgachi fish market. One of the advantages of being in a port city is having fresh seafood and Jalgachi fish market is located just beside the port.
There are 2 types of areas in the outdoor market – fresh and dried, and also a 6 storey building full of seafood restaurants. Pick your seafood and have it cooked for you on the spot in whichever cooking method you desire.
Address: 52 Jagalchihaean-ro, Jung-gu, Busan
Subway station: Nampodong or Jagalchi Station
5. Visit neighbouring Jinhae
Jinhae Gunhangje festival is the biggest cherry blossom festival in Korea. Bask in the atmosphere of an endless stretch of street vendors, love birds and cherry blossoms.
Gyeonghwa station aka cherry blossom road, is another famous spot for viewing Cherry blossoms and a perfect place for taking those instaworthy pics.
Tongsin-dong, Jinhae-gu, Changwon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
Getting there: 1hr bus ride from Busan (Sasang station) to Jinhae
Getting to Busan from Seoul
Less than 3hrs via the KTX
Highly recommend to book your tickets in advance as they get sold out really fast.
